Jaybird volunteered and work at camp from 1978 until 1990. One of his biggest achievements at camp was building the C.I.T. program. The C.I.T. program was so large and well run, we had quality staff members every year since he started.
He also worked at the Riverside Rollaway in Agawam and was a big CB enthusiast. It was truly amazing how rich he was with friends. He will be dearly missed.
High Times Poster Funeral ServiceO. C. Fields, aka Lucky was our beloved ranger through the 80s at camp. His wife, Penny, became our Camp Mom.
Russ frequently talked about being involved in laying out the roads when the property was first bought - It was quite an undertaking clearing trees etc. (Luckily the rules were not as restrictive as they'd have been in today's world) so average people like Russ could help. He'd frequently take days off from work to go down there and work with other volunteers and the people hired to do it.

Another favorite of Russ' was Chapel Island. Because the camping sessions were 2 weeks there was a Catholic Priest who would do services on Sundays (in those days no one MISSED Mass for any reason). Russ would do Protestant services there for the other denominations and sometimes he'd take his Jewish Scouts aside on Fridays and discuss their religion with them. Russ was a deacon of his church and Superintendent of Sunday School.
Russ loved the outdoors of LOISR and for years would work every weekend weed wacking and mowing trying to keep it looking beautiful especially near the Bridge of Flags and people's first impression.
When Russ first took Dave and Bob to LOISR they would go to Cherokee and do Patrol Cooking. In those days the Council would open Cherokee for 3 weeks (I think it was 2 weeks) then close for a week while the staff moved everything to Pequot for Dining Hall Camping and Troops that wanted Dining hall would come there and I think it was open for 3 weeks.
